This is another of Paulo's many captivating books. So much so that when I was in VA visiting Harvey, and was out shopping at Tyson's Corner, I had to go to the nearest Barnes and Noble to finish reading the book (I left my copy at her house). Here are some of my favorite excerpts from the book!It started out with...
"Once upon a time, there was a prostitute called Maria. Wait a minute. 'Once upon a time' is how all the best children's stories begin and 'prostitute' is word for adults. How can I start a book with this apparent contradiction? But since, at every moment of our lives, we all have one foot in a fairy tale and the other in the abyss, let's keep that beginning."
How he came up with the title...
"Now come on, Maria, you're exaggerating. It's really only forty-five minutes, and if you allow time for taking off clothes, making some phoney gesture of affection, having a bit of banal conversation and getting dressed again, the amount of time spent actually having sex is about eleven minutes."
I thought this was the most romantic...
"Do you want me as a professional?"
"I want you however you want to be wanted."
Just bought "Brida" today. Thought it was a new book, but silly me, it was written in 1990!
